Tigers Facts - Types of Tigers

There are five types of Tigers. They are also known as subspecies. The different subspecies are found in areas of Asia, India, and Russia. The largest subspecies is found in snowy areas of Russia. The smallest and darkest subspecies is found farther south, in the jungles of Indonesia. Tigresses (females) are naturally smaller than males. The subspecies differ slightly in size and color.

Habitat: These animals live in mountainous and highly forested areas.

These are the following subspecies of tigers.

Siberian or Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) This is the largest of the tiger subspecies. Males are very large; they can be as long as a station wagon. The color of the coat of theses tigers is the palest orange coat and there are fewer stripes on it.
Bengal or Indian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) This is the most common subspecies of tiger.
Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) These tigers are smaller and are darker than Bengal tigers.
South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) These tigers are slightly smaller than the Indochinese subspecies. There are few tigers (as much as 30) of this type that are left as they have almost been eliminated by the Chinese government in the 1950s. At that time these animals were thought to be pests.
Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) This is the smallest tiger of all the types.

Thus there are only five surviving subspecies: the Amur (Siberian), South China, Indo-Chinese, Bengal, and Sumatran tigers. All living kinds of Tigers are endangered.
