Tigers Facts - Facts
The Tigers are recognized by their orange, black and white pattern. These stripes help tigers; it fulfills the role of camouflage when they hunt in the long grass. Dark stripes on a pale background break up the tiger's outline as it lies in wait for prey to come near. Tigers can also be black with tan stripes, all white so-called albino, or white and tan. The "white tigers" that can be found in some zoos are not albino cats; instead they are a white-and-tan color variations with blue eyes (true albinos have pink eyes).
Tigers Facts - Mating
Actually tigers can breed all the year round, but usually they mate in the winter or the spring. The mating period lasts 20 to 30 days.
Tigers Facts - Breeding habits
These are actually solitary animals and they have their own territories but, when they mate, they communicate with each other over long distances with a loud "aa-uuu-aa-uuu" roar (the emphasis being on the first syllable).
Tigers Facts - Cubs
Tiger cubs are born small and helpless. Tiger mothers usually leave the cubs alone for a period of time while they hunt. The mother feeds these little cubs until they reach the age of two years old. Only then can the cubs begin to hunt on their own. Usually there are about seven cubs that a female can have every two years. In the wild, the mother generally cannot kill enough prey to feed so many hungry cubs, so usually only two cubs survive.
Normally, two to four cubs are born. The gestation period lasts about 113 days. On rare occasions a tigress may produce as many as six cubs. Newborn cubs weigh 800-1,500 gm each. A cub is 31-40 cm from head to tail. Milk teeth appear after two weeks. The little cats are born blind; they usually open their eyes by the tenth day.
During its first eight weeks, the Tiger cubs drink their mother's milk, although the tigress continues to feed them on meat for five to six months. The mother usually brings up the cubs single-handedly. Males do not care for the young at all. This is the worry of the female.
When the cubs are two months old, the mother brings them out of the den. The cubs are very playful, adventurous, and curious about the world around them. At first the cubs are fed small prey animals but after six months the cubs are old enough to be left alone for several days. The young tigers begin hunting alone when they are 11 months old.
